The Blue Sky Gallery in Oregon/USA offers glimpses into the obscure world of small shopkeepers; the showcase of works by Vladimir Antaki continues until 26 May 2019.

To create his unusual series, Vladimir Antaki (born 1980 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) travelled across Europe, America and the Middle East to photograph and interview shopkeepers – or ‘guardians’, as he calls them in the project’s title.

The artist sees his subjects as custodians of ‘urban temples’: in an age of generic retail chains, small shops still offer glimpses into earlier times and near-forgotten modes of living. In particular, they are able to tell us much about the unique character of a city at a certain point in time. Antaki’s visually arresting portraits remind the viewer of the beauty of these increasingly rare spaces.
