‘Fotoclubismo’ is the first museum exhibition on Brazil’s modernist photography outside of the country. Curated by Sarah Meister, the showcase focuses on São Paulo’s Foto Cine Clube Bandeirante (FCCB) – a group of ambitious amateur photographers whose creative achievements remain widely recognised within Brazil, but little-known in the European and North-American photography scenes. The group’s members carried out radical experiments, both in terms of technical processes and expressive forms – often with the aim of distilling everyday scenes into innovative compositions.
The exhibition features more than 60 photographs from the MoMA’s own collection, including works by Julio Agostinelli, André Carneiro and Roberto Yoshida.
