On January 18, 2023, the exhibition ‘This Place Called Home’ opens at Leica Store Paris with an evening reception starting at 7 p.m. Photographer Matt Wilson will be in attendance, and available to sign his accompanying photo book.
Understated and almost benign in their subject matter, Matt Wilson’s images are imbued with a slightly corroded aesthetic, owing to the artist’s choice of outdated film. The results are nocturnal scenes with visible grain, in which decadent light outlines intimate shadows; and daytime landscapes with a smoky, misty rendering. This technique of integrating the arbitrary nature of film into his creative vision, forms the basis of the British photographer’s unique style. His pictures are impossible to designate to a specific time. Some are reminiscent of a Bruegel painting, others of a still from a 1960s Hollywood film. Wilson does not seek to capture a scene as he sees it, but rather a moment as he feels it.
All photographs featured in ‘This Place Called Home’ were recorded with a Leica MP, and developed by the artist himself. The long periods he spends in the darkroom, waiting for the master print, culminate in the timeless interpretations that make Wilson’s work so unique – filled with opalescent colours and mesmerising hues.
