With the exhibition ‘Youth, Girls. Luo Yang Selected Works’, the Francisco Carolinum presents around 60 photographs by Chinese photographer Luo Yang.
Luo Yang (b. 1984) documents elements of contemporary China that are rarely taken note of in the West: her portraits show an emerging subculture that defies established stereotypes and expectations. Since 2019, the Beijing-based artist has been photographing young girls in their everyday surroundings, in an attempt to understand their lives as well as her own. Themes such as gender fluidity are as prevalent as the young women’s search for individual expression, which veers between creative orchestration and authentic physicality. The result is a sensitive portrait of China’s Generation Z, and its quest for direction and identity.
