Between 1944 and 1945, American photographer Lee Miller (1907–1977) – in her role as an accredited war correspondent for Vogue and Life magazine – documented pivotal moments of the war in Europe, such as the siege of Saint Malo and the liberation of Paris by the Allied Forces. In January 1945, she followed the Allied troops as they advanced across the Alsace and Ardennes regions towards Cologne.
The showcase ‘En Route to Cologne’ features some well-known works from this period, but mostly centres on the images Miller captured during stop-offs in Aachen and the surrounding area, which have never been exhibited before.
The show was curated by Dr. Nina Mika-Helfmeier, and organised in collaboration with the Lee Miller Archive and the Opel Villas Art and Culture Foundation. The documentary film ‘Lee Miller: Through the Mirror’ by Sylvain Roumette will be screened as part of the exhibition.
