Yuki Okumura and Monika Stricker

February 4, 2015

From February 6 to April 2, 2015, the Japanese Institute in Cologne presents a joint exhibition by Yuki Okumura and Monika Stricker.
"Every half-hour of this life is interrupted by five minutes of the outside world: a standard deviation, Las Vegas, interference fields on a vehicle, Toyota Highlander, and a daily deviation, Double Negative. The Standard Deviation Las Vegas orbits, rotates, stumbles and expands in a dizzy choreography, while simultaneously attempting to decipher its own message: Dexterity, Half-Truths, Alienation, Premeditated Actions. Kim Kardashian celebrated her 33rd birthday at the Tao in Las Vegas."

With these words, Yuki Okumura and Monika Stricker outline their jointly developed exhibition concept. The artists (both born in 1978) met in 2013 while completing a residency at the Wiels Contemporary Art Centre in Brussels, and have remained in close contact ever since.

Artist and translator Yuki Okumura is from the Aomori region in Japan. He studied Visual Arts in Tokyo and Brisbane, Australia. Monika Stricker is a graduate of the Dusseldorf Art Academy, where she was a Master Student of Prof. Rita McBride.
