Cologne’s Bene Taschen Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition Recollections in America with photographs by David LaChapelle; the showcase will be on display from 26 April to 27 June 2018. David LaChapelle is particularly known as a fashion and celebrity photographer who made his name during his tenure at Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine. To produce the series Recollections in America, LaChapelle used an unusual approach: he sought out second-hand family photos from the 1970s and 1980s, and manipulated them by inserting additional objects and people that were entirely unrelated to the original scene. The resulting images are idiosyncratic, and at times even sinister, representations of American culture.
In parallel, the gallery also presents excerpts from the project Spanish Harlem by American documentary photographer Joseph Rodriguez: created in the 1980s, the series consists of touching, eccentric portraits of the New York neighbourhood’s inhabitants.
