Bosnian photojournalist Damir Sagolj has been announced as the winner of this year’s Istanbul Photo Awards.
Bosnian photojournalist Damir Sagolj has been announced as the winner of this year’s Istanbul Photo Awards. The Reuters photographer was honoured with the ‘Photo of the Year 2018’ distinction for his poignant image showing the dead body of a small boy whose eyes have been covered with a pair of leaves.

Canadian photographer Kevin Frayer was awarded first place in the ‘Story News’ category for his dramatic coverage of the Rohingya refugee crisis. In the ‘Single Sports’ category, German photographer Lukas Schulze stood out with his image Athlete vs. Animal, while Russian photographer Pavel Volkov won ‘Story Sports’ with a photo series he had created for the newspaper ’Vechernyaya Moskva’.

Some 37,000 images from 125 countries were entered in this year’s competition. An international jury determined the winners during a selection process from 18 to 21 March 2018. The winning images will be presented in an exhibitions throughout Turkey and beyond, and will also be published in the form of a book.
