From June 2nd to 26th, Getxo in the Basque country becomes a meeting place for a wide-ranging audience: as well as attracting photography professionals from around the world, the Getxophoto festival aims to promote a ‘culture of proximity’.

Instead of its usual run-time in September, the 16th edition of Getxophoto takes place in June – a perfect way to start the summer season. As always, the festival’s main focus is on people. Not just the visiting festival audience, but also the town’s community – shopkeepers, restaurateurs, residents and local photography enthusiasts – are encouraged to actively participate in the event.

The programme of lectures, guided tours, presentations, showcases, workshops and evening strolls are designed to be both educational, and beneficial to the social fabric of the town. Under the heading of ‘TO IMAGINE’, this year’s Getxophoto explores how our imagination imbues our lives with meaning, and the visual possibilities inherent in this theme.

Around twenty exhibitions and installations (featuring works by artists from Switzerland, Bolivia, Mexico, the UK, Brazil, Columbia and Turkey, among others) are presented across the city, most of them outdoors. As a result, public spaces become platforms for new encounters based on mutual respect, as the town is turned into a vibrant oasis of artistic expression.
