Ute and Werner Mahler

Within the framework of the 6th European Month of Photography, the Robert Morat Gallery in Berlin is presenting the Die Seltsamen Tage (Strange Days) exhibition of works by the artist couple, from October 11 to November 22, 2014.

Ute and Werner Mahler (born 1949 and 1950) were key figures in the East German photography scene and, following the turnaround, jointly created the renown Ostkreuz Agency and Ostkreuz School of Photography in Berlin, in 1990 and 2004 respectively*. Following Monalisen der Vorstädte (Monalisas of the Suburbs) in 2011, the couple went on to their second joint project, Die seltsamen Tage.

Die seltsamen Tage, a series of large-format landscape studies, is an expedition into well-known regions. Ute and Werner Mahler were out and about in Brandenburg, Thuringia and Lower Saxony, looking for moments that can be interpreted in a variety of manners. “It was about discovering the unexpected,” the Mahlers explain. “Simply put, we were looking for the kind of moments that you'd want to tell your partner about at the end of the day.”
