The Quiet Rhythms of Everyday Life

July 7, 2026

The showcase From Our Windows can be viewed at Galerie Vagues in the southern French city of Arles from July 6 to September 20, 2026.
From Our Windows is a dual exhibition conceptualised two years ago for the 2024 edition of the Kyotographie photo festival in Japan. When Rinko Kawauchi was invited to present her work at this prestigious event, she decided to share her exhibition space with Tokuko Ushioda, a photographer 32 years her senior. Despite belonging to different generations, the two women artists share a fascination with the quiet rhythms of everyday life.

In her series as it is, Rinko Kawauchi chronicles the first years of her daughter's life through the changing seasons, amidst the rural landscapes surrounding their home. She weaves a visual poetry of immense tenderness, in which the cycles of birth, growth and grief become intertwined.

Tokuko Ushioda, meanwhile, turned her attention to a box filled with photographs found in the back of a dusty wardrobe. She had unearthed this forgotten treasure when clearing out the space she had rented as her studio for more than forty years. Before this, it had also been her family home, which she shared with her husband and daughter from 1978 to 1985. The rediscovered images beautifully capture the daily routines of the young family, going about their lives in their small, one-room apartment.
