Born in Lisbon in 1944 and has been living in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal, since 1983. He discovered photography as a young man, but decided to follow a career in medicine. As a retired gastroenterologist, he decided in 2009 to dedicate himself to photography – specifically street photography: “On the streets, I’m fortunate to discover everyday wonders that turn out to be fragments of a parallel dimension where the mundane can be extraordinary.” His first book 99 (with 99 pictures) appeared in 2019; 88 (with 88 pictures) appeared in 2025.

Vasco Trancoso

From 2016 to 2019, the Portuguese photographer spent virtually every day wandering around with his Leica Q, in squares and on streets and beaches: he explored primarily his home town of Caldas da Rainha; yet the 99 images also include motifs from Foz do Arelho, Lisbon and Óbidos. A real discovery.
