Europe is a fascinating continent with 700 million inhabitants, 150 languages, and an unequalled coexistence of cultures that have been intermingling for thousands of years. Amidst short geographic distances and long-standing traditions, there is a still relatively young mindset whose continuous renewal is based on an unparalleled foundation of art and culture.
At the heart of the exhibition is the photographer’s series Melting Pott – an exploration of one of Germany’s most multi-faceted and ambivalent regions, created in 2018/2019 on behalf of the Brost Foundation. It shows Brönner’s very personal perspective on the Ruhr region – from its industrial architecture to its cultural and natural landscapes, all the way to its diverse population of different nationalities and religions. In addition to capturing well-known figures such as footballer Mario Götze, the artist also delved deep into the mining industry that has traditionally defined the area. The result was a powerful long-term study, comprised of emotive portraits and scenes that were often captured in difficult shooting conditions, including under extreme heat.
The series – which portrayed not only the Ruhr region’s inhabitants and their socio-cultural relationships, but also its impact on the broader European landscape – served as the foundation for the extended showcase, which will now debut at the Ludwig Múzeum.
Identity - Landscape Europe was curated by Walter Smerling, and will be on view from 14 April to 30 June 2024.
