The exhibition brings together classic works by masters such as August Sander and Imogen Cunningham with contemporary series by artists such as Natalya Reznik or Jess T. Dugan. Portraits by Albrecht Fuchs, Martin Rosswog and Wilhelm Schürmann illustrate how life circumstances and experiences can become etched in people’s faces. John Coplans’ undisguised depictions of his own ageing body are juxtaposed with Cindy Sherman’s reflections on our society’s ambivalence towards ageing in relation to femininity. Long-term projects by Andreas Mader, Christian Borchert, Deanna Dikeman and Larry Sultan address how family constellations change with time, while existential themes like death and letting go – which form an integral part of the human experience – are explored in arresting photographs by artists such as Daniel Schumann.
The showcase is on view at Neuhardenberg Castle until 17 December 2023 and will subsequently move to the SK Cultural Foundation’s exhibition space in Cologne, where it opens on 2 March 2024.
