Mikiko Hara (b. 1967 in the prefecture of Toyama) ranks among Japan’s most acclaimed contemporary photographers. She is renowned for her poetic snapshots of the landscapes, figures and material objects she encounters. The Ibasho Gallery in Antwerp now presents a selection of the artist’s work spanning from 1996 to 2014.
Mikiko Hara studied Art History and Theory at Tokyo’s Keio University, before graduating from the Tokyo College of Photography. Working with a 1930s vintage camera, she developed a method of taking pictures without looking through the viewfinder. This technique has been her modus operandi ever since.
Hara’s work is represented in the collections of major art institutions around the world, including the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Museum of Photography in Berlin, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Huis Marseille in Amsterdam, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum.
