The new Leica M Monochrom

Now with CMOS sensor: the Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246)

Quicker than expected, Leica has now announced the second generation of the black and white specialist: the M Monochrom (Typ 246). The decisive difference to its predecessor is the change from a CCD sensor to a CMOS one.

The monochrome version of the Leica Max sensor shares its basic design with the sensor of the M (Typ 240) and M-P (Typ 240), only the red, green, and blue filters of its pixels are replaced by clear ones. With the improved high-ISO capabilities of the Max sensor, the upper limit is raised to ISO 12 500 and there is even a ‘push’ setting offering ISO 25 000 in manual or automatic ISO mode.

The M Monochrom shares the newly developed electronics, the weather-proof casing, the fundamentally renovated range finder and, of course, the film feature, with the Leica M (Typ 240).
