With his carefully lit studio compositions – imbued with elements of modernism, neoclassicism and surrealism – he advanced to one of the leading photographers for Vogue and Vanity Fair (1926 to 1935) and later for their rival publication, Harper’s Bazaar.
Deeply committed to his craft, he never regarded magazine photography as inferior to fine art. Indeed, Richard Avedon described him as “a genius, the master of us all.” Hoyningen-Huene’s work ultimately went on to inspire generations of legendary photographers and film-makers worldwide.
Glamour & Style shines a light on the photographer’s illustrious circle of contemporaries and companions with a selection of iconic portraits, spanning from the 1920s to the 1960. The exhibition is on view in Berlin until 23 March 2024.
