Stuttgart: Summer of Photography

August 7, 2024

The Stuttgart State Gallery hosts the main showcase of this year’s Fotosommer Stuttgart: the jury-selected presentation is displayed at THE GÄLLERY exhibition space until 8 September 2024.
This year’s edition of Fotosommer Stuttgart, which has been taking place at irregular intervals since 2002, revolves around the theme of ‘Transformation’: the festival’s main showcase is presented at THE GÄLLERY, an expansive exhibition space located on the ground floor of the Stuttgart State Gallery

Following an Open Call, the international jury selected 22 artists who addressed the given theme from a wide range of perspectives: be it mankind’s relationship with our planet’s natural resources, the reciprocal interplay between nature and culture, the processes of changing economic and ecological structures, or youth and old age as transient stages of life.

In many of the showcased works, photography itself takes centre stage as a medium of transformation: it converts light into images, renders the three-dimensional world on a two-dimensional surface, and intercepts the passage of time. Photographs can help change our points of view, and encourage us to see the world from different perspectives – thereby fostering continuous reflections on the possibilities and opportunities for change.

The represented artists are (a.o.): Sabine Bungert & Stefan Dolfen, Sinje Dillenkofer, Jule Ehlenz, Gabriele Engelhardt, Benjamin Friedle, Miriam Häfele, Ingar Krauss, Karsten Kronas, Elisa Lohmüller, Marlene Müller, Mara Pollak, Eva Schmeckenbecher, Julia Scholl, Sven Weber, and Stephan Zirwes.
