With Sleeping Beauty – on view until 21 January 2024 – FOAM Amsterdam presents an exciting showcase of works by Dutch fashion photographer Carlijn Jacobs.
Driven by her fascination for traditional forms of costume and disguise, Jacobs (b. 1991 in Groningen) plays with phenomena such as the Japanese geisha and the age-old tradition of the Venetian carnival, and places them in relation with today’s beauty and fashion scene. In addition, the artist also experiments with imagery created with the aid of AI.
Sleeping Beauty encompasses a combination of Jacobs’ commissioned works for leading fashion brands, and independent projects that are shown for the first time. The exhibition spaces are enhanced by the vision of Dutch artist and designer Sabine Marcelis: elements such as mirrored walls, coloured glass cubes or an illuminated totem perfectly complement the displayed images, culminating in a mesmerising, dreamlike experience.
