Peace and Hope
Peace and Hope
February 4, 2021
‘HOPE • PEACE 2020’, Günter Zorn & Herbie Yamaguchi
The exhibition takes an optimistic look at a future that will once again allow us to come together and socialise.
The showcase was partly inspired by the emotional effects of the global pandemic: people the world over are grieving the loss of shared experiences, carefree embraces, and the ability to be close with others in life’s beautiful and difficult moments. “Art – including photography – plays an even more important role in coping with the dark times that are still with us in the new year of 2021“, Naoko Ohta, Executive Curator of the MYD Gallery, explains. “The joyful, optimistic and yet sensitive photographs by the two artists remind us of happier moments – with HOPE on the horizon, and PEACE as the pillar for a new beginning.”
Featuring images taken before the pandemic, the exhibition encourages the viewer to look forward to the good times that are sure to come. In their respective series – ‘Stay Safe’, ‘Keep Smile 2020’ and ‘KAGURAZAKA Mignardises’ – Leica photographers Günter Zorn and Herbie Yamaguchi capture the everyday lives and joy-de-vivre of the citizens of Japan’s capital. Presented under the joint heading of ‘A Dialogue Between Two Photographers’, their images remind the viewer of the happiness and beauty that can be found in life’s small yet special moments.
