Paris the Beautiful

March 28, 2024

Les Douches la Galerie presents photographs by Thomas Boivin: Ici – Belleville, Ménilmontant, Place de la République, on view until 6 April 2024.
Since 2010, Thomas Boivin has pursued his work as a photographer in the northeast of Paris. On his frequent strolls through the area’s multi-cultural neighbourhoods, he captures residents and passers-by – often engaging in a dialogue – and reveals corners of the city that are often overlooked. His portraits and urban landscapes, which the photographer develops into prints with subtly balanced shades of grey, have become characteristic hallmarks of his work.

Despite walking the same streets as Brassai, Marcel Bovis and Robert Doisneau, Boivin does not indulge in nostalgia for a bygone Paris, but instead draws inspiration from present-day American photographers such as Mark Steinmetz or Judith Joy Ross. When he is not taking pictures of friends and family, or out exploring the city, Boivin focuses his lens on still lifes – a pictorial tradition that reflects the artist’s distinctive taste for beauty and simplicity.
