Pain, Sweat & Determination

December 18, 2023

From the late 1980s to the early 1990s, Larry Fink created an intense study of America’s boxing scene – capturing iconic shots of legends such as Mike Tyson and Jimmy Jacobs, both inside and outside the ring.
Throughout his career, the renowned American photographer (1941 – 2023) was drawn to socio-psychological and political themes, with a particular focus on the divide between the working class and the privileged elite. His role was always that of a quiet observer with a keen eye for capturing covert glances, secret exchanges and unguarded expressions.

From Hollywood celebrities at Oscar parties, to the tough and uncompromising world of boxing, Fink’s famous black and white photographs bring to mind the paintings of the Baroque Masters: in compositions that echo Caravaggio’s use of chiaroscuro and Rembrandt’s dramatic lighting, celebrated and unknown figures move between light and shadow, euphoria and pain.

With the same characteristic visual approach, the photographer documented a boxer’s drive and instinct to survive – underpinned by extreme discipline, readiness and ambition. At the same time, Fink’s images show the deep bond and sense of brotherhood that exists between many boxers, transcending the bloodshed and brutality inherent in the sport.

Fighters drenched in sweat, proud and defiant even in the face of suffering and defeat: tenacious warriors that rise to every challenge with intense focus, hard training and almost unimaginable grit.

‘Boxing’ is on display at the Bene Taschen Gallery in Cologne until 17 February 2024. The exhibition was still conceptualised in collaboration with the artist, who passed away on 25 November 2023.
