In her series dedicated to the Russian Orthodox Lipovans living in Romania’s Danube Delta region, the photographer used the light at sunrise to capture the simplicity and beauty of life.
“There is a special light in Mila 23 and I wanted to capture it in a portrait, so I joined Alexandra and her father on an early morning fishing trip. The plan was to see the sunrise and capture a portrait of either Alexandra or her father. But when a fish was caught, the moment grew even more meaningful. As I watched the father clean the fish, I was struck by the silver light shimmering on its skin. In that moment, I knew the fish had to be part of the portrait.

Alexandra agreed to pose with it, and that choice allowed me to capture a beautifully lit scene that depicted the quiet beauty of the Delta and its people. Pleased with the morning ride, the catch and the portrait, I remembered the Romanian proverb which goes, 'He who wakes up early gets far'".
