Market Day

January 23, 2026

On January 24, 2026, Leica Gallery Porto re-opens its doors with the exhibition Dia de Feira by Matilde Viegas.
In her series Dia de Feira, Matilde Viegas presents Portuguese markets as vibrant hubs of social connection – showing that they are far more than places of business or tourist attractions, but an essential aspect of everyday life.
The exhibition, which forms part of the international photo festival Encontros da Imagem, was conceptualised by Magda Pinto (curator of the Leica Gallery Porto and Head of the Leica Akademie Porto), and marks the re-opening of the gallery following its recent renovation.

In Portugal, market day is a ritual that has prevailed since the middle ages. However, Viegas captures this tradition not as a folkloric cliché, but as an authentic cacophony of people and goods, gestures and voices, exchange and community.

Her photographs are complemented by an audiovisual installation by artist and filmmaker Mafalda Salgueiro, which captures the noises and rhythms of a typical market day, creating an even more immersive experience.

Dia de Feira serves as a contemporary portrait of an ancient cultural ritual that continues to offer human connection and deceleration, even amidst the stresses of our fast-paced digital world.
