The Macro-Elmarit-R 60 mm f/2.8 was not only a universal standard lens, but also offered a focusing range which extended down into the macro region. Due to its angle of view and high light sensitivity, the 60 mm lens was particularly suited to isolating the subject from the background for very natural portrait photographs.
The Macro-Elmarit-R 60 mm f/2.8 also offered a convincing close-up and macro performance, with a closest focusing distance of just 27 centimetres. Combined with the Macro-Adapter-R, an aspect ratio of 1:1 could be achieved.
The first Macro-Elmarit-R 60 mm f/2.8 was introduced as early as 1972. Two subsequent versions (featuring only minor amendments) were released until the lens was discontinued in 2008. While Version I and II could additionally be used on the Leicaflex series, the third and last version was only compatible with Leica Rs.
