Jürgen Schadeberg (1931–2020) made his mark in photography history as a courageous, passionate photojournalist with a humanist perspective. In addition to his native Germany and wider Europe, his adopted home country of South Africa was the primary focal point of his more than seven-decade-long career.

Schadeberg lived in South Africa from 1950 to 1964, and again from 1985 to 2007. This allowed him to gain unique socio-cultural insights, from the injustices of racial segregation to the country’s vibrant music scene. As a dedicated documentarist and astute observer, he accompanied South Africa’s arduous path out of apartheid – creating artfully studied images that have long become icons of photojournalism.

In 2018, Jürgen Schadeberg received the Leica Hall of Fame Award in recognition of his remarkable life’s work.

His oeuvre has also been represented in the Portfolio sections of LFI 7/2014 and 1/2019.
