Through to April 23, 2022, Galerie Karsten Greve dedicates an exhibition to one of the most important photographers of the twentieth century. This marks the first solo show of Herbert List’s work in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
Herbert List (1903-1975) created an unparalleled oeuvre that was strongly influenced by the European avant-garde. By combining the austere aesthetics of the Bauhaus movement with a surrealist approach, he developed a unique visual language that draws the viewer into the magic of the captured moment.
Born in Hamburg as the son of coffee importer List & Heineken, List completed an apprenticeship before studying Art History and Literature at the University of Heidelberg. From 1930 onwards, he dedicated himself to photography – inspired by an encounter with Andreas Feininger. In 1952, List joined the international photography cooperative Magnum in Paris. His first solo exhibition (Paris, 1937) was followed by countless international showcases, and publications in the world’s leading magazines. List’s work is also represented in numerous public collections.
