Giampiero Assumma – "Transformation"

October 14, 2013

An exhibition by Italian artist Giampiero Assumma will be showing at the Imago Fotokunst Gallery in Berlin from 19 October to 16 November 2013
In his photographic work, Giampiero Assumma (1969) focuses on the exploration of the human condition – emotional and mental states, religious faith, rituals and obsessions. His images are designed to raise questions, in this case about our use of the term 'insanity', and the desire to turn one's body into a work of art.

The two projects "Bodybuilder" and "The Lower World" will be on display at the gallery.

Bodybuilder documents scenes before and during bodybuilding contests, including preparatory rituals before the show. Determined to redefine the physical limits of the human body, athletes are attempting to sculpt themselves into anatomical machines.

The Lower World illustrates the human alienation of those suffering from severe mental illness. The documentary was created during numerous visits to the last six Asylums for the Criminally Insane still operational in Italy.
