A French water park in summer: Franck Bohbot had the feeling that he was in the right place at the right time. It reminded him that youth lives on in everyone.
LFI: Slides, summer, sun – why do these things represent an expression of youth for you?
Franck Bohbot: I love summer, the light, the vibe... and the slides are so much fun. I love everything with slides, and all beach activities as well. People act differently during this season; and yes, it’s definitely an expression of my youth. My summers in Spain and the South of France make up a huge part of my memories, and start to appear in my work.
What was your photographic approach?
I wanted to create something original, fresh, between dream and reality. I was also trying to develop a new aesthetic as well, by pushing the visual storytelling more, and including more people in my photography, more life. I’ve always been interested in the relationship between architecture and cinema. Photographing the places where we play, learn, work, gather... sometimes empty; then, including more humans gives me the feeling of life.
Your images seem to come from a different era, like the 50s, and are reminiscent of pastel paintings…
Thank you! Honestly, I feel that these photographs would not be the same without these colours, as well as the compositions. I agree that they could be pastel paintings. But it wasn’t my specific wish, I just photographed what I had in front of me... it was a lot of fun! This series is very different from others I’ve done, with more art direction, and scouting. In this case it's really like coming back to the foundation of photography.

Born in Longjumeau, Southern France in 1980, the photographer moved to New York City in 2013. Since 2008, he has produced numerous photo series that deal with urban architecture. Theatres, libraries, swimming pools are all parts of his universe. The photographer’s visual style is marked by cinematic influences and a keen eye for the theatrical.
