Documentary Observations

January 3, 2024

With the group exhibition Open Territory, Fotohof Salzburg presents seven artists’ approaches to documenting everyday life in Czechia and Slovakia.
While the showcased projects primarily revolve around the observation and documentation of an external reality, the presented styles, methods and perspectives also reflect the surrealist traditions of the Czech avant-garde, whose influence continues to the present day.

Martin Kollar, who was the winner of the LOBA 2014, addresses the transient and fragile nature of our existence in his series Provisional Arrangement. Jana Ilková’s County, meanwhile, captures strange moments of everyday life in rural regions. In her series Ramble, Ema Lančaričová attempts to re-visualise repressed memories, while Libor Fojtík’s Czech Tramps shines a light on an obscure subculture of ‘vagabonds’ finding solace in a collective fantasy.

Public Species by Ivana Palečková, Homo Pragensis by Daniel Šperl, and Lucia Nimcová’s Olena complete this exceptionally multi-layered exhibition, which can be viewed at Fotohof Salzburg until 27 January 2024.
