Little Shaolin Monks

Shaolin monks are known from action movies and TV series – but that has little to do with daily life in a Chinese monastery. This is where the students learn fighting techniques as a form of self-discipline and control. The photographer visited the Little Shaolin Monks and was fascinated by their determination and dedication.
LFI: How did you come across this topic and what was it that you found so interesting about it?
Cody Choi:
I first met a group of Little Shaolin Monks when we were performing together in Hong Kong during the concert of famous Hong Kong singer Andy Lau. The monks had just finished the movie New Shaolin Temple with Jackie Chan and Andy Lau, and Andy invited them to perform in his concert. I met Shaolin Monks again when they worked together for Sutra & TeZukA, a contemporary dance show by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui at Sadler's Wells in London. I was fascinated by the Shaolin monks; by their determination, dedication, skills, and personalities! To go to Shaolin Temple to meet, take photos of them, and learn more about Chinese history and culture was a dream come true!

In addition to their discipline, the Shaolin are characterized by the strength and tension in their bodies. To what extent are the forms important to your photography?
As a professional dancer and choreographer myself, I’m always interested in different forms of movements. I always love speedy, powerful movements, and the way they move is just fascinating: they can go to the extremes – very explosive at times, but also very calm at others. To be able to have that level of understanding and complete control of your body is absolutely incredible. I really, really love the contrast, extremeness and the unique personalities. I want to capture that.

You photographed with the Leica SL, how did the camera perform?
The Leica SL2 is a work of art. I love the design, the solid material, the bright EVF, the smooth joystick, and the craftsmanship. And the photos that come out of the camera are amazing! Especially the colour! It was raining during the shoot and I wasn't in the slightest bit worried, as the camera and lenses are perfectly sealed against rain and sand. It inspired me to go out to create and experience life.

As an adult, what have you learned from the Little Shaolin Monks?
I’ve learnt a lot from the Little Shaolin Monks – happiness, fearlessness, positivity, determination, discipline, being humble and having a dream. It is very important to find out who you are, what you are good at, and your uniqueness. Have a dream, work hard and have no regrets. You know yourself, use it!
