Born in France in 1975, Chazal studied geography, philosophy and journalism and found his artistic expression at the interface of these three disciplines. As a freelance photojournalist and documentary film maker, he focused on tensions in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. In 2019, he received the Albert Kahn Museum Prize. Levant was published in September 2024, just a few weeks before he passed away.

Chazal spent over 15 years creating a chronicle of the flow of history at the crossroads between the Occident and Orient. Always on the move, with a clear eye and without prejudice, the French photographer captured the vastness and the confines, everyday scenes and theatres of war, weaving together myth and reality.
