Born on January 31, 1930 in Bautzen. 1948–1951: apprenticeship at the portrait studio of Pan and Christine Walther; post as a photo lab technician and photographer in Dresden. 1953–1955: Richter studied at the Leipzig Academy of Fine Arts (HGB) before working as a freelance photographer. In 1983, received a retrospective diploma from the HGB, followed by a post as a lecturer; 1990–1991: teacher at the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences; 1992: honorary professorship at the HGB Leipzig. Numerous awards: e.g. 1984 Art Award of the City of Leipzig, the 1989 Art Award of the GDR; 1992 Cultural Award of the German Society for Photography; in 2020, she received the first Bernd and Hilla Becher Prize in honour of her life’s work. Evelyn Richter passed away in Dresden on October 10, 2021.
