Born and raised in Washington D.C., she initially worked as a freelance photographer, from the mid-1970s at Washington Monthly magazine and from 1979 as a contract photographer for TIME magazine, which gave her the opportunity to cover the presidencies of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton in the White House, as well as the election campaigns of Jimmy Carter, Walter Mondale, Al Gore, John Kerry and Hillary Clinton.
