For over four decades, Vivian Maier (1926–2009) worked as a nanny for various families in Chicago and New York. Throughout this time, as well as in her later years, she ceaselessly took photographs: street scenes, portraits, still lifes, landscapes. When Maier passed away in 2009, her estate encompassed more than 120.000 negatives, numerous Super-8 and 16mm films, as well as audio recordings and prints. Remarkably, the artist’s oeuvre went unrecognised during her lifetime. It was only in 2007, two years before her death, that a young historian discovered her life’s work – most of which had been locked away in storage units.
Maier was a master of spontaneous shots that show the beauty within seemingly mundane moments: the extraordinary within the everyday. With a keen eye, she went out in search of obscure and often ambiguous scenes, which she captured in unusual compositions.
The exhibition – which is the result of a collaboration between the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation and diChroma photography, Madrid – can be viewed with prior registration. Alternatively, the showcase is accessible without notice on the headquarters’ monthly ‘Open Saturdays’ (November 19, 2022 and January 14, 2023, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.).
