From July 8 to September 3, 2017, the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery is presenting an exhibition of current, large-format works by Nobuyoshi Araki.

With 50 years in the business, Nobuyoshi Araki (born 1940) is one of the best known, and possibly most controversial, photographers in Japan. Araki is known world-wide for his eroticised photos, where he sounds out the borders between art and pornography. Araki’s presence in the world of photographers rests on his variations of Kinbaku motifs – Japanese bondage art that can be traced back to the 15th century. Not all the pictures are sexually loaded, but by and large they reflect the photographer’s life and the everyday moments of existence.
