Nobuyoshi Araki, born 1940 in Tokyo, is one of the most significant and prolific Japanese photographers of the present day. Over the past six decades, he has produced countless images and published an enormous array of photo books and films.
While he is most widely known for his controversial nude and bondage scenes, the exhibition at the Albertina Modern focuses on the evolution of Araki’s influential, diary-style approach which is rooted in his personal life and immediate surroundings.
The exhibition draws on the extensive holdings of art collector and former gallery owner Rafael Jablonka, which were transferred to the Albertina in 2019. A long-time devotee of the artist’s work, Rafael Jablonka compiled one of the most comprehensive Araki collections in the world, comprising images from different creative phases. The showcased selection marks the first time excerpts from these holdings are presented under a cohesive theme.
