A Photographer’s Life, featuring images by Manfred Baumann, will be open at the Leica Gallery in Frankfurt, Germany, from November 25, 2022, to February 11, 2023. The exhibition introduces viewers to a diverse, partly unknown oeuvre which centres around man and nature in equal measure.
Manfred Baumann (b. 1968 in Vienna) initially worked as a photographer’s assistant, before honing his skills in fine-art nude photography – an aesthetic that continues to play a central role within his work. He is best known, however, for his portraits of international celebrities and stars: be it the unmistakeable eyes of Hollywood legend Bruce Willis, a charismatic-looking David Hasselhoff with his daughter Hayley, a humorous shot of German actor Thomas Kretschmann falling into a pool, or his intense portrait of Karate-Kid actor Martin Koves – whose inescapable gaze graces the cover of Baumann’s book, Face to Face.

Born June 19, 1934 in Aachen. In 1954, he began studying metallurgy, before dropping out four years later to work full-time as a photographer. He purchased his first Leica in 1952. Numerous awards and publications led quickly to success. Baumann travelled extensively and experimented in depth with the possibilities of colour photography. When he passed away on May 24, 2019, in Düsseldorf, he had been largely forgotten. His daughter transferred his estate (ca. 3,500 black and white and ca. 750 colour photographs, countless slides and numerous documents, magazines and books) to be handled by the ZEPHYR – Raum für Fotografie at the Reiss-Engelhorn Museums in Mannheim.
