Snow is the common thread weaving its way through Klavdij Sluban’s oeuvre: for the past 25 years, the photographer has been entering into a visual dialogue with this recurring character, whose poignant presence is closely interlinked with the artist’s childhood in Slovenia.

Sluban shoots with an analogue Leica M4P, paired exclusively with an Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8. A phototube to measure light intensity is always part of his equipment, which is strictly pared down to the essentials.

This restrained way of working enables him to be at the heart of a situation without disrupting it. A sense of distance is established by the wide angle of his lens, as well as his frequent choice of de-centred or tilted compositions. As a result, Sluban’s images are not so much determined by the scene they depict, but rather by the photographer’s own gaze.

Selected works from this evocative long-term series, which spans close to 25 years to date, can be explored in LFI 1/2023.
