Herbert List (1903–1975) is considered a ‘modern classic’: the German photographer first gained acclaim for his black and white photographs, in which he combined the formal austerity of the Bauhaus movement with the magic of surrealist inspiration. Under the title of ‘Herbert List: Italia’, the Karsten Greve Gallery currently presents a vast selection of visual essays, photo reportages and portraits captured between 1933 and 1961.

Antique ruins, landscapes and architecture served as key sources of inspiration for the artist, who has often been referred to as the ‘photographer of silence’. These classic, formal compositions are now juxtaposed with the intuitive street scenes he captured with his Leica during countless journeys through Italy. ‘Herbert List: Italia’ is accompanied by a book of the same title (published by the Karsten Greve Gallery), featuring a text by Matthias Harder.
