Andrzej Steinbach (born 1983) has created a series featuring two young women: each photograph, taken against the same neutral backdrop, is presented in a black and white portrait format. The series consist of a total of 186 images.
A selection of 20 photographs from the series is now showing at the Sprengel Museum in Hanover, in the artist's first museum exhibition. Yet the images pose a myriad of questions. Do they signify a form of political protest? Are they a reference to the gender debate? Perhaps they are a subtle psychological study, or even a type of fashion photography? Maybe the series is an exploration of what degree of truth the medium of photography is able to capture – an assessment of the communicative power of visual art?
The photographer does not offer up a definitive answer. However, with every minute spent looking at his images, the viewer experiences an increasingly intense desire to question their meaning. 'Figure I, Figure II' does not endeavour to answer questions. Instead, it is an almost urgent invitation to observe closely and precisely, scrutinising the scene before us from every angle we can possibly think of.
