London’t Autograph Gallery currently presents the series ‘Fireflies’ by Indian transmedia artist and activist Poulomi Basu. Using photography, video and sound, Basu reflects on experiences of trauma – particularly with regard to patriarchal violence. The artist’s relationship with her mother serves as the central focus point of this powerful, deeply emotive body of work.
Poulomi Basu (b. 1983) has gained renown for influential projects such as ‘Blood Speaks’ and ‘To Conquer Her Land’. Her first photo book, ‘Centralia’ – published by Dewi Lewis in 2020 – went on to win the 2020 Rencontres d'Arles Discovery Award Jury Prize, and was shortlisted for the 2021 Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize.
In parallel to Basu’s international debut, the Autograph Gallery also shows the London premier of the acclaimed film ‘Lumen’ by interdisciplinary artist Sutapa Biswas. Born in India and educated in the UK, Biswas highlights the role of women – not just as a mainstay of family and home, but as an avatar of social conscience.
