Few German authors are as deeply involved with the history of photography as Hans-Michael Koetzle (*1953), who is now being honoured by the DGPh. The plethora of elaborate and meticulously researched photo books, encyclopaedias and, in particular, exhibition catalogues he has produced over the past decades would fill entire shelves.
Koetzle’s ‘Lexikon der Fotografen’ (Encyclopaedia of Photographers, 2002) is considered a definitive reference to this day, as are his numerous compendiums on topics such as Twen magazine or the work of art director Willy Fleckhaus. As well as accompanying René Burri over the course of several years, Koetzle dedicated himself intensely to the oeuvres of photographers such as F.C. Gundlach, René Groebli, Barbara Klemm, Ulrich Mack, Charlotte March or Will McBride. Leica enthusiasts are sure to remember the Leica World magazine (1996-2007), which Koetzle spearheaded as editor-in-chief. His curatorial achievements – which include the internationally acclaimed exhibition ‘Eyes Wide Open! 100 Years of Leica’ (2014) – or his research on Dr. Paul Wolff & Tritschler (culminating in an eponymous publication in 2019), are equally remarkable.
Kehrer-Verlag has just published the essay volume ‘Reden wir über Fotografie’ (Let's talk about photography), edited by Andreas J. Hinsch, which brings together many of Hans-Michael Koetzle's texts in a concise form.
We extend our sincere congratulations, and look forward to many more discoveries, photo books and exhibitions!
