Culture for the Homeless

April 17, 2015

The German Society for Photography (DGPh) has announced the winner of this year's DGPh Education Award.
In acknowledgement of their cultural programme for homeless individuals, the Homeless Centre "Haus St. Martin am Autoberg" in Hattersheim-on-the-Main has been chosen as the recipient of this year's DGPh Education Award.

The cultural programme was established ten years ago with the aim of dismantling prejudice against the homeless and long-term unemployed. Detailing their decision, the jury explained that "from the beginning, the medium of photography was an important part of these projects, and facilitates a connection between the homeless and the residents of the area."

The programme consists of exhibitions as well as photo competitions, discussion rounds and evening events on photography-related topics.

The jury was impressed by the constantly growing endeavour, "which is based on a continuous collaboration with artists, universities and the public. As a result, cultural perspectives are made available to people on the margins of society."
