The 12th edition of the Darmstadt Days of Photography is set to take place from April 28 to May 7, 2023. Within this timeframe (and beyond), the South Hessen Regional Gallery presents the exhibition ‘Zwischenwelten’ by Werner Mansholt, which will be on display until June 13, 2023.
The featured images are the result of multiple journeys to various cities and countries around the world. The German Leica photographer (b. 1949) is renowned for his enigmatic yet humorous street scenes, whose cryptic, often surreal aesthetic tends to be born out of coincidence, rather than elaborate planning or predetermined conceptual directives. In the artist’s own words, “I am interested in the fractures, the cracks, the edges, the gaps, the in-between spaces and the contradictions that the world incessantly offers, providing a glimpse of the complexity that lies beneath the surface and the superficial. In my work, I encounter beauty and transience, pride and longing, loneliness and community – in short, life in all its richness and diversity.”
