Berlin’s Gropius Bau presents a comprehensive showcase of works by Berlin-based artist Akinbode Akinbiyi. Open from February 7 to May 17, 2020.

Akinbode Akinbiyi (born 1946 in Oxford, UK) is a British-Nigerian reportage, architectural and cultural photographer, author and curator based in Berlin. Much of his work has been focused on the rapid expansion of megacities such as Lagos, Berlin, Johannesburg, Bamako and Chicago, and the social realities and changes this entails.

The exhibition ‘Six Songs, Swirling Gracefully in the Taut Air’ is an anthology of black and white photographs, presenting the viewer with a world of overlooked narratives, gestures and beliefs in the midst of noisy streets, coastal horizons and densely populated neighbourhoods. The showcase includes Akinbiyi’s internationally acclaimed series ‘Lagos: All Roads’ as well as his ongoing project ‘African Quarter’, comprising images captured in Berlin’s Afro-German communities since the late 1990s.
