Iran, Afghanistan, Palestine, Dagestan, Senegal, India: all of these countries tend to be associated with political instability and poor living conditions. And yet, their inhabitants have developed circus cultures that are unparalleled anywhere else in the world. Johanna Maria Fritz (b. 1994) introduces us to politically minded clowns in Gaza, whose performance highlights the absurdities of life on the front between Hamas and the Israeli military; her images tell of circus schools in Afghanistan, established to give children a sense of community and joy; in the North Caucasus, the photographer documented the region’s ancient tightrope traditions; in Iran, she portrayed circus artists dedicated to spreading fun and laughter amidst an authoritarian regime.
