BOGDAN DZIWORSKI – ON THE OCCASION OF HIS 80TH ANNIVERSARY

December 8, 2021

Congratulations to the Polish film maker and photographer Bogdan Dziworski, on the occasion of his 80th birthday.
As is the case for so many Leica photographers, Henri Cartier-Bresson also served as a great inspiration for Bogdan Dziworski. The constant search for the “decisive moment” was something they shared in common and, occasionally, Dziworski was given the honorary title of “the Cartier-Bresson of Poland”. Even though he was in contact with the Magnum Agency, co-founded by Cartier-Bresson, he ultimately decided to dedicate his creativity primarily to film. As a result, Dziworski is known today as one of the most renowned representatives of avant garde and experimental films in Polish cinema. Nevertheless, he created a significant body of photographic work, especially in the 1960s, which has only recently been rediscovered and exhibited.

Dziworski’s analogue black and white images are rich in contrasts. They offer a glimpse of daily life in Polish cities, during the second half of the 20th century. However, even decades later, the motifs are neither nostalgic nor out of time; but, rather surprisingly, timeless. The photographer found his lively scenes primarily within the urban diversity of city streets. He began by capturing people's daily lives, and ended up creating a kaleidoscope of life itself. The atmosphere in his pictures is defined predominantly by a cheerful ease. Each image can tell a whole story or short anecdote, often poetic or amusing; so it is hardly surprising that some of the motifs could be mistaken for film stills, taken from a longer movie project.

Bogdan Dziworski was born on December 8, 1941, in the Polish city of Krynica-Zdrój, and studied at the Lodz Film School. He worked as a cameraman, director, documentary film maker, and was Deacon at the Katowice Film School. Numerous books of his photographic oeuvre have now been published, and his pictures have also appeared in various exhibitions. In 2017, the Leica Gallery Warsaw presented f/5.6, a comprehensive retrospective of his work, with accompanying catalogue.

We offer our congratulations to Bogdan Dziworski today, on the occasion of his birthday!

Bogdan Dziworski appeared as a Leica Classic in the 7/2018 issue of LFI.

The Dziworski Retrospective f/5.6 will be shown at Leica Galerie Vienna from April 8, 2022 until mid-June 2022.
