World Press Photo of the Year: Mads Nissen: „The First Embrace“

In der Kategorie „Story of the year“ gewann Antonio Faccilongo mit seiner Serie „Habibi“. Ralph Pace gewann in der Kategorie Natur-Einzelbild. Sein Foto „California Sea Lion Plays with Mask“ zeigt einen Seehund, der auf eine medizinische Maske zuschwimmt. Das Gewinnerbild „The Transition: Ignat“ in der Kategorie Porträts stammt von Oleg Ponomarev und zeigt den Transgendermann Ignat mit seiner Freundin Maria.
Rund 4300 Fotografen hatten sich mit knapp 75.000 Fotos an dem Wettbewerb beteiligt.
Die World-Press-Photo-Ausstellung wird in Deutschland unter anderem vom 8. bis zum 30. Mai 2021 im Kulturdepot Dortmund und vom 6. bis zum 29. August 2021 in Hamburg bei Gruner+Jahr zu sehen sein.
