From the Heart of the City

January 29, 2025

The Buchkunst Gallery in Berlin presents works by six acclaimed artists in this visual journey across decades: From the Heart of the City, on view until 22 February 2025.
The transformation of urban spaces is the central theme of this group exhibition, which comprises selected works by six renowned international photographers. Created between 1952 and 2024, the featured images invite viewers on a journey of discovery through Berlin, Hong Kong, New York, Chicago, Paris, Johannesburg and Kyoto.

French photojournalist Stéphane Duroy is represented with colour photographs of Berlin during the fall of the Berlin Wall, along with compelling impressions of NYC. German photojournalist Thomas Hoepker also trained his lens on the USA: his images of New York in the 1980s are complemented by his famous portraits of Muhammad Ali, captured in Chicago in 1966. The showcase also includes excerpts from two series by South African photographer Roger Ballen, while Swiss photographer René Groebli is featured with selected works from his legendary series The Eye of Love (Paris, 1952).

The compilation continues with images of Hong Kong by Michael Wolf, who spent two decades documenting Asia’s modern megacities. This is juxtaposed with the abstract renditions of Japanese photographer Yasuhiro Ogawa, taken from his series Lost in Kyoto.

“On the wings of the photographic medium, we visit places that have become important for our work and our lives, that inspire and change us,” gallerists Ana Druga and Thomas Gust write in the accompanying text for this fascinating world trip across time.
